Isabel Allende (born 2 August 1942) is a Chilean-American writer. Allende, whose works sometimes contain aspects of the “magic realist” tradition, is famous for novels such as The House of the Spirits (1982) and City of the Beasts (2002), which have been commercially successful.(…)
Allende’s novels are often based upon her personal experience and historical events and pay homage to the lives of women, while weaving together elements of myth and realism. She has lectured and toured many American colleges to teach literature. Fluent in English as a second language, Allende was granted United States citizenship in 1993, having lived in California with her American husband since 1989.
This author has become one of my favorite. So far I’ve read only two books : The House of the Spirits and The Infinite Plan. I loved both of them.
The House of the Spirits tells a story of 3 generations of a family, although the storyteller is the man of the family, he’s not the main character. The point of the book is to show emancipation of woman and also history changes on slavery and people’s minds.
They made a movie out of this book, the actions are the same as in the book but it may not be happening to the same character (ex: one thing is happening to Blanca that in the book is happening to her daughter Alba, because the movie has to have a shorter version and Alba doesn’t get to grow up as in the book).
The Infinite Plan is about a family that don’t have a place to call home because they’re always travelling to that the men of the family can spread his beliefs to the world. This family has gone through so many bad stuff, secrets had been kept and the children grew up in a wrong environment (in my opinion).
These two books may not mean anything to you but if I tell you that she wrote Zorro, you can easily situate the stories’ style, place and values.
Allende recently launched a book called The Japanese Lover, I am dying to read it as much as I want to read the other books she wrote and I wanted to share this all with you.
So, have you read any books from this author? Do you like her? Are you gonna buy the new book? Let me know.
I’m Daniela, and I kick and bite.
